Garden Route Itinerary: Day-by-Day Guide
Day 1: Cape Town to Mossel Bay (380km)
Depart Cape Town along the N2 highway, passing through the beautiful Overberg region with stops at Hermanus for whale watching (June–November) and the charming town of Swellendam. Arrive in Mossel Bay, the official start of the Garden Route, and visit the Dias Museum Complex and the famous Post Office Tree.
Day 2: Oudtshoorn & Cango Caves
Take a detour inland to Oudtshoorn, the ostrich capital of the world. Visit a working ostrich farm, explore the magnificent Cango Caves (one of the world's finest dripstone cave systems), and drive the breathtaking Swartberg Pass for panoramic views of the Klein Karoo.
Day 3: Knysna — The Garden Route's Crown Jewel
Explore the Knysna Lagoon with a boat cruise past the iconic Knysna Heads. Visit the Knysna Waterfront, sample fresh oysters at one of the waterfront restaurants, and hike through the ancient Knysna Forest to spot the elusive Knysna elephants.
Day 4: Plettenberg Bay
Discover Plettenberg Bay's pristine beaches and wildlife sanctuaries. Visit Robberg Nature Reserve for a spectacular coastal hike, go whale watching (seasonal), or visit Monkeyland and Birds of Eden — the world's largest free-flight bird aviary.
Day 5: Tsitsikamma & Storms River
The grand finale! Walk the famous Storms River suspension bridge in the Tsitsikamma National Park, kayak up the Storms River gorge, or take the ultimate leap at the Bloukrans Bridge bungee — at 216 metres, it's the world's highest commercial bungee jump.
