The definitive guide to Table Mountain — cable car tickets, best hiking trails, sunrise experiences, and expert-led tours. Everything you need for South Africa's most iconic landmark.

Rising 1,085 metres above Cape Town, Table Mountain is one of the oldest mountains on Earth — six times older than the Himalayas. Voted one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature, it's the crown jewel of the Cape and the single most iconic landmark in Southern Africa.

Cable Car Experience

The Table Mountain Aerial Cableway has been operating since 1929. The modern rotating gondola spins 360° during its 5-minute ascent, giving every passenger panoramic views. At the top, a network of walking trails, viewpoints, and a café await.

Pro tip: Book your tickets online in advance. Walk-up queues can exceed 2 hours in peak season (December–January). Our tours include skip-the-line access.

Best Hiking Routes

Platteklip Gorge (Beginner–Intermediate)

The most direct route. Steep but well-maintained stone steps. Allow 2–3 hours up. The reward: emerging onto the flat summit with the entire Cape Peninsula laid out below.

India Venster (Intermediate–Advanced)

Cape Town's favourite hike. Scrambles over rocks with chain-assisted sections. Stunning views of the city, Lion's Head, and the Twelve Apostles. 3–4 hours up.

Skeleton Gorge via Kirstenbosch (Intermediate)

Start in the botanical gardens and climb through indigenous forest to the back table. Beautiful but longer (3–4 hours). Can be combined with the cable car down.

Weather & When to Visit

Table Mountain creates its own weather. The famous "tablecloth" — a blanket of orographic cloud — can form in minutes. Check conditions before heading out:

  • Best months: November–March (summer) for clear skies
  • Worst months: June–August (winter) — frequent rain and closures
  • Wind: The cable car closes when sustained winds exceed 50 km/h
  • Temperature: 5–10°C cooler at the summit than at sea level
