Combine South Africa's stunning Garden Route with a Big Five safari for the ultimate South African experience. From Cape Town to Kruger, via beaches, forests, and whale watching.

South Africa's Greatest Road Trip + Big Five Safari

The Garden Route and safari combination is the quintessential South African trip, and it's one of the most rewarding two-week itineraries in all of Africa. From the cosmopolitan energy of Cape Town and the vine-covered valleys of the Winelands, along one of the world's most beautiful coastal roads through ancient forests and seaside towns, to the raw excitement of a Big Five safari β€” this trip has everything.

What makes this combination so special is the variety. In two weeks, you'll experience: world-class food and wine, dramatic coastal scenery, whale watching, forest hikes, bungee jumping (if you dare), charming small towns, and some of the best wildlife viewing in Africa. No other country offers this diversity of experiences in such a compact, well-organised package.

The Ultimate 14-Day Itinerary

Days 1-3: Cape Town & Winelands β€” Table Mountain at sunrise, Kirstenbosch Gardens, V&A Waterfront, Bo-Kaap's colourful streets. Day trip to Stellenbosch and Franschhoek for wine tasting and long lunches. Cape Point and Boulders Beach penguins. Cape Town alone could fill a week, but 3 days captures the highlights.

Day 4: Cape Town to Hermanus (120km) β€” Drive along the stunning coastal road via Gordon's Bay and Betty's Bay. Stop at Stony Point for African penguins. Arrive in Hermanus for the world's best shore-based whale watching (June-November). Walk the cliff path, spot Southern Right whales from land, and enjoy fresh seafood.

Day 5: Hermanus to Wilderness (350km) β€” Drive along the N2 through Swellendam (charming historic town) and over Tradouw Pass (spectacular mountain scenery). Arrive in Wilderness, a peaceful village on a lagoon backed by forested hills. Kayak on the Wilderness lagoon at sunset.

Day 6: Knysna β€” A 30-minute drive takes you to Knysna, the Garden Route's jewel. Explore the Knysna Heads (dramatic sandstone cliffs flanking the lagoon entrance), take a boat cruise, and feast on Knysna oysters at the waterfront. Visit the indigenous forests nearby for walks among ancient yellowwood trees.

Day 7: Tsitsikamma & Storms River β€” Tsitsikamma National Park is the Garden Route's outdoor adventure capital. Walk the suspension bridge over Storms River Mouth, hike to the waterfall, or try the world's highest commercial bungee at Bloukrans Bridge (216m). The ancient forest walks are magical.

Day 8: Addo Elephant National Park β€” Drive to Addo (3 hours from Tsitsikamma) for an afternoon game drive. Addo has over 600 elephants, plus lions, buffalo, and a fantastic diversity of antelope. It's malaria-free and offers excellent self-drive infrastructure. Stay at one of the park's rest camps or a nearby private lodge.

Day 9: Full Day Addo β€” A full day of game driving in Addo, including the Southern Hope section for a chance to see rhino. If you've chosen the malaria-free option, you can add another night at a private Eastern Cape reserve (Shamwari, Pumba, or Kariega) for guided Big Five viewing.

Days 10-13: Kruger / Sabi Sands Safari β€” Fly from Port Elizabeth to Kruger (or Hoedspruit for the Sabi Sands). 4 nights at a luxury lodge for the full Big Five experience with expert guides, walking safaris, and sundowners. The contrast between the Garden Route's green beauty and the raw bush of Kruger is electric.

Day 14: Return β€” Morning game drive, then fly to Johannesburg for your onward journey. Depart South Africa with two weeks of extraordinary memories.

Malaria-Free Alternative

For families with young children or travellers who prefer to avoid malaria medication, replace the Kruger section with 3-4 nights at a private Eastern Cape reserve. Shamwari, Pumba, Amakhala, and Kariega all offer Big Five viewing in a malaria-free environment, and they're easily reached from the Garden Route without flights.

This itinerary is endlessly customisable. Add helicopter tours, shark cage diving, ostrich farms, or extra safari time. Let us create your perfect Garden Route and safari adventure.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do you need for Garden Route and safari?
Ideally 12-14 days: 3 days Cape Town & Winelands, 4-5 days Garden Route drive (Hermanus to Addo), 4-5 days safari (Kruger/Sabi Sands or malaria-free alternative). This pace allows proper exploration without rushing. A shorter 10-day version is possible by reducing Garden Route to 3 days.
Is the Garden Route malaria-free?
Yes, the entire Garden Route is malaria-free. You can also make the entire trip malaria-free by choosing Addo Elephant Park or a private reserve like Shamwari, Pumba, or Kariega at the end of the Garden Route instead of flying to Kruger. These Eastern Cape reserves offer Big Five viewing without malaria risk.
Can I self-drive the Garden Route?
Absolutely! The Garden Route is one of the world's great self-drive road trips. The N2 highway is well-maintained, signage is excellent, and the scenery is spectacular. Most visitors hire a car in Cape Town and drop it off in Port Elizabeth. Drive on the left side of the road.
