Hermanus — the world's best land-based whale watching destination. Complete guide to whale season, cliff path walks, the Hemel-en-Aarde wine valley, and our expert tours.
Perched on the cliffs of Walker Bay, Hermanus is widely regarded as the best land-based whale watching destination in the world. From June to November, southern right whales arrive in their dozens to calve and nurse in the sheltered bay — often just metres from the cliff-top walking path.
Whale Watching Season
The first whales typically arrive in June, with numbers building through winter. September and October are peak months — up to 100 whales can be in Walker Bay simultaneously. The Hermanus Whale Festival (late September) celebrates the season with music, markets, and marine education.
Hermanus has the world's only whale crier — he patrols the cliffs and blows a kelp horn to alert visitors of nearby whales.
The Cliff Path
The Hermanus Cliff Path stretches 12km from New Harbour to Grotto Beach. It's arguably the most spectacular coastal walk in South Africa, with benches positioned at prime whale-viewing spots. The section from the Old Harbour to Voëlklip is the most rewarding (2–3 hours).
Hemel-en-Aarde Wine Valley
Just 10 minutes from town, the Hemel-en-Aarde ("Heaven and Earth") valley produces some of South Africa's finest cool-climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Top estates include:
- Hamilton Russell Vineyards — Iconic Pinot Noir, consistently rated among Africa's best
- Bouchard Finlayson — Burgundy-style elegance
- Creation Wines — Spectacular food-and-wine pairings with valley views
- Ataraxia — Mountain-top estate with breathtaking panoramas

"We watched a mother whale and her calf playing just below our cliff-top breakfast table. The whale crier appeared, blowing his horn, and the whole town seemed to stop and watch. It was Hermanus magic." — Anna & Michael, Melbourne
