The definitive guide to whale watching in South Africa — southern right whales, humpbacks, Bryde's whales. Best locations from Hermanus to Plettenberg Bay, boat tours, and seasonal calendar.
South Africa's coastline stretches 3,000 kilometres from the subtropical waters of KwaZulu-Natal to the cold Atlantic swells of the West Coast. Along this magnificent shore, an extraordinary annual migration unfolds: thousands of whales arrive to breed, calve, and feed — creating one of the greatest marine wildlife spectacles on Earth.
Whale Species You'll See
Southern Right Whale
The star of the show. Up to 15 metres long and 80 tonnes, these gentle giants arrive from Antarctic feeding grounds to calve in the warm, sheltered bays of the Western Cape. Their name comes from being the "right" whale to hunt — they float when dead. Today, they're the right whale to watch. Season: June–November.
Humpback Whale
Famous for their acrobatic breaching and complex songs. Humpbacks pass along the east coast (KwaZulu-Natal) heading north May–August, and return south September–December. They're increasingly seen in False Bay. Season: May–December.
Bryde's Whale
The only baleen whale that lives in South African waters year-round. Commonly spotted in False Bay, often while sardine hunting. Season: Year-round.
